A Certificate earned at the KVCC Automotive Academy indicates readiness to perform the full range of duties expected of an entry level Automotive Technician.   The Core Competencies align with industry recognized standards defined by the National Automotive Technology Education Foundation (NATEF) and as such provide the necessary foundation for success on the ASE certification examinations.

The KVCC Automotive Academy provides an accelerated, competency based program through which participants can expect to gain the skills and credentials necessary to begin a successful career.    A Task Force, made up of Kalamazoo area employers of Automotive Technicians has provided guidance to assure the alignment of instructional focus, competencies and skill assessment are in keeping with the needs of the local job market.  In addition, local employers have helped to define the employability factors that are critical to this career choice. 

Is the Automotive Technician Academy for you?

The KVCC Automotive Academy is an intensive, full-time program. The program is focused on preparing students to work in the competitive of automotive service and repair. The progressive learning format (one module builds upon the next) necessitates enforcement of an attendance policy and an academic progress requirement. These requirements include:

• Students are required to attend every class and to be on-time. Absences must be managed as would be expected in the workplace. (i.e., calling into the program supervisor, making up assignments, etc.)
• Students may be asked to leave the Academy if they fall behind academically or if they are unable to attend class.
• Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Most students find it difficult to maintain employment while attending the Academy.
• Academic standards are high. Students will be challenged to give 100% to the program.
• A student who is not fully committed to a career as an Automotive Technician may not be well suited for the program.
