The Patient Care Academy is a full-time training program that combines the education and job skills required for patient care in a variety of settings.

The course content, as set by the State of Michigan Curricula, includes training in:

  • Long-term care
  • Working as part of a healthcare team
  • Human interaction skills
  • Resident rights
  • Infection control
  • Safety and emergency
  • Rehabilitative care
  • Basic personal care skills
  • Nutrition/hydration
  • Use of restraints
  • Taking vital signs
  • Dealing with death and dying
  • Caring for those with cognitive impairments as well as developmental disabilities ad depression

In addition to the state requirements, participants will receive training in medical terminology, body structure and systems, common disease processes, pain, professionalism, cultural diversity, legal and ethical issues in healthcare, CPR/AED, first aid skills, and employability skills training.

Graduates who successfully complete the Patient Care Academy are prepared for and eligible to take the State of Michigan examination for certified nurse assistants (CNA). As a CNA, one is able and equipped for employment in long-term care, assisted living, dementia care, hospice, home health, and acute care.
